On May 6, 2000, Chester City were relegated from the Football League after 69 years in a 1-0 defeat at home to Peterborough United.

Chester legend Gary Talbot became the first player to be induced into the City Fans United hall of fame. Talbot joined the Sealand Road club after being captured by South African born Chester manager, Peter Hauser, in September 1963.
