PREVIEW | Carlisle United Ladies vs Chester FC Women

Chester FC Women turn their attention to cup competition this weekend as they face an away trip to play Division One North side Carlisle United in the First Round of the Argyle Sports Kit North West Regional Plate.

Martin Fitzsimons’ side made it four successive wins on the bounce in all competitions last weekend following an impressive 8-3 win against Alder FC Women.

In that time Chester have scored an impressive 30 goals in four games averaging at just under eight goals a game at the moment. The Seals early season form well and truly seems to be back with recent results seeing them climb to 5th in the league table and reach the Quarter-Final of the Cheshire County Cup.

Sunday’s opponents Carlisle United currently find themselves in 10th place in the league having won two out of a possible eleven games so far in the league this season with 10 points on the board. The Blues come into this weekend’s game with only one win from their last eight games, that coming last weekend thanks to a narrow 1-0 win against Chorley Women FC.

  • Chester’s Molly Wood comes into Sunday’s game in fantastic form having scored seven goals in her last two games. This weekend could see her score a third hat-trick in a row
  • A win for The Seals this weekend would see them record a 5th consecutive on the spin in all competitions
  • Carlisle United are looking to win back-back games on Sunday for the first time this season

Manager Thoughts

We’re looking forward to a new test this weekend. Playing Carlisle brings around many challenges. We don’t know anything about them, their strengths, their danger players. But that in many ways can be liberating.

We know what level of performance we’re capable of. Personally – and I think the players would agree – we’ve not reached that yet. But we’re close.

“We’ve shown in periods of the game how devastating we can be, but it can take us a while to build to that. That’s what we need to get right and we’re focused on dominating games of football from start to finish. Our whole team is fully committed to doing just that, and we believe it’s within our grasp.”
