Two well taken strikes from Christian Doidge and Liam Noble secured Forest Green victory at the New Lawn in the National League.
Forest Green came the quickest out the blocks – with several early chances to break the deadlock.
Christian Doidge directed his effort onto the upright from within the six-yard box, before a header was cleared off the line by Elliott Durrell from the resulting corner.
Kaiyne Woolery struggled to make the most of a strong challenge on Sam Hughes, and with time in the box, cut back to shoot wide of Alex Lynch’s near post.
Jon McCarthy handed Liam Davies his first start, and first appearance in a Blues shirt – and he commanded the left-hand side with a growth in confidence during the first half.
Rovers’ lead marksman Doidge gave the hosts the lead on the 50th minute. Finding a hole in the Blues defence, the 24-year old weaved his way through – picking up a through ball to coolly slot past Lynch.
Liam Noble proved to be an inspired change for Mark Cooper – as the midfielder netted Rovers’ second goal on his return to the squad. Some positive build up play by Doidge provided Noble with the opportunity to try his luck from range – and placed his effort in the top corner.
Chester’s closest effort of encounter came on the 88th minute – when Durrell tried his chance from 30 yards out, but his strike hit the roof of the net.
