Barrow 3 Chester 2

Chester’s spirited fightback at Barrow wasn’t enough for a point tonight – as the hosts edged out Jon McCarthy’s men.

It looked bleak at 3-0 down with goals from former Blue Ross Hannah and a brace from Jordan Williams; but strikes from James Akintunde and Theo Vassell made it a tense finish – nevertheless, the visitors had too much to do in the last 25 minutes.

It was a lively start to the game at Holker Street, Hannah having the first chance which Liam Roberts was equal to.

The visiting men in yellow did have early chances of their own though through Elliott Durrell and Evan Horwood – the latter seeing his long range effort whistle just beyond the post.

It was an open affair as Barrow attacked, Roberts having to deny Meikle and Hannah, for a second time, in quick succession.

Ryan Astles nearly opened the scoring at the other end from a corner, his glancing header falling just wide of the post.

But the Blues fell behind as the first half was drawing to a close; Durrell’s poor backpass was seized upon by Hannah and he rounded up Roberts to score.

Barrow’s lead was doubled just two minutes later; Williams heading home the rebound after Roberts had parried Hannah’s shot.

After the break the Blues attempted to mount a comeback – with Kane Richards testing Joel Dixon from range but the keeper saved.

Nevertheless, the home side extended the advantage on 57 minutes as Williams added his second; cutting inside and rifling home from outside the area.

The Blues were struggling – and only a stunning Roberts save prevented a fourth from Harrison.

Following a double substitution, Jon McCarthy’s men pulled a goal back and it was one of the subs; James Akintunde, who stabbed home from Astles’ ball in.

Four minutes later, they creeped even closer to Barrow with another goal on 70 minutes. Akintunde made it and Theo Vassell tapped home from close range.

Richards headed wide in stoppage time from Jordan Chapell’s cross – and that proved to be the last chance.
