Chester 1 Maidstone 3

Chester slumped to their first home defeat of the 2016/17 season – following a second half collapse against Maidstone.

It was level at the break after James Alabi had cancelled out Anthony Acheampong’s opener – but second half goals from Ben Greenhalgh and Alex Flisher gave the Stones the points. Alabi was also sent off late on.

Newly promoted Maidstone started the brighter and almost had a goal inside ten minutes from Bobby-Joe Taylor following a promising run – but his shot flashed beyond the post.

Johnny Hunt responded for the Blues, however his shot was straight at Lee Worgan.

Another scare followed on the visitors counter attack, as Murphy raced clear but his cutback was swooped off the line by Blaine Hudson.

The warning signs were there – and then the Stones took the lead; as Muprhy’s hanging cross was nodded home with power by Anthony Acheampong.

Tom Murphy was proving a menace on the right flank; he had the next chance as he found more space, but Roberts pushed it away.

It was a worrying start, but the Blues pegged back their visitors as Kane Richards slipped it in behind for Alabi; who sidestepped Acheampong and smashed it home.

Chester had the wind in their sails now and the fans were right behind them – Alabi curling just over after superb interchange between himself, Richards and Hunt.

The second half began with the visitors starting well once again, Liam Roberts needing a strong hand to push away Flisher’s effort.

Another Roberts stop kept it level when he clawed over Greenhalgh’s effort.

Greenhalgh was not to be denied on 57 minutes though, meeting a cross inside the box; keeping his composure and volleying home.

The Stones’ lead was extended just seven minutes later when Alex Flisher fired home from the edge of the box.

Blues goalscorer Alabi was then sent off on 78 minutes for a late challenge on the goalkeeper Worgan – going in for a 50/50 ball.

It could have been even more when subsititute Dumebi Dumaka had a go, but his shot cannoned back off the post.
