Torquay 2 Chester FC 0

Chester FC slumped further into a relegation battle this evening at Plainmoor after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow basement battlers Torquay United.

The decisive moments came at either end of the game with first Nathan Blissett rising highest to a home corner on three minutes, before Iffy Allen wrapped up the points with a low effort on the stroke of full time.

The result leaves Steve Burr’s men perilously close to the drop zone, with 45 points from 42 games played, and just four points from the National League relegation spaces.

The Blues fell behind in the opening minutes as Nathan Blissett headed a Toby Ajala corner past Jon Worsnop to give the hosts the lead on the south coast.

Saturday’s two-goal midfielder John Rooney tried his best to orchestrate the Blues getting back into things; first whipping in for Ryan Astles to head over, before smacking a trademark free kick onto the crossbar from 25 yards midway through the first half.

As the opening 45 drew to a close it was Torquay who could’ve extended their lead through goal scorer Blissett, but from a Worsnop drop he couldn’t strike his chance on target.

The Blues had shouts for a penalty as Johnny Hunt looked to be felled in the home area on 39 minutes, but nothing was given by the Match Officials – and it could’ve ended drastically in first half added time but for Jon Worsnop parrying an Iffy Allen effort away from a quick Torquay break.

After the interval it was the hosts who started quickest with Ryan Astles forced to clear off the line from an Ajala effort, before Jon Worsnop had to save low down from the same player.

A double change for the Blues after 56 minutes saw Ryan Lloyd and Craig Hobson introduced, and it almost provided an immediate impact as Lloyd struck across the Torquay goal, but the effort was deflected wide of keeper Brendan Moore’s goal.

The Blues looked to push for an equaliser as Ross Hannah forced a save from Moore whilst Ryan Astles continued to cause problems again from a Rooney corner, but the Gulls wrapped it up with moments left.

From a quick counter, Shaun Harrad released Iffy Allen who made no mistake to put the hosts 2-0 up, and consign the Blues to a fourth defeat in the last six games with just four games remaining.
