Chester 0 Macclesfield 2

Macclesfield took all the spoils from The Blues, thanks to two fortunate first half goals.

An Ian Sharps own goal and a controversial penalty scored by Kristian Dennis was enough for the Silkmen.

The Blues started this Cheshire encounter brightly, with Sharps poking the ball wide from a Johnny Hunt corner.

It was a slow start to the game, and Paul Turnbull registered Macc’s first shot on target when he hit a rifled effort straight at Worsnop.

The visitors did go in front on 25 minutes though, a quiet game taking a mistake to separate the sides.

Danny Rowe’s cross from the left was unfortunately sliced into his own net by Captain Sharps.

Sharps was in the centre of things at the back, he was nudged off the ball moments later by National League top scorer Kristian Dennis, but he volleyed over the bar.

It got worse just shy of the half hour mark, a Macc corner appeared to be harmless – but ref Ian Hussin pointed to the penalty spot.

Dennis converted the kick for his 20th of the season and double the Silkmen’s advantage.

The Blues went forward in search of hope, Sharps flicked on Ryan Higgins throw, but Lloyd looped an effort over the bar.

The league’s top marksman Dennis was causing serious problems – shooting wide from the edge of the box.

After the break, he had another chance to make it three, but his header was tipped over by a superb one-handed stop from Worsnop.

Lloyd then missed a glorious chance to half the deficit – Mahon released Tom Shaw, and the Port Vale loanee connected with the cross, but the ball flashed wide of the post.

Steve Burr’s second sub, John Rooney, then hit a 30 yard free kick through the wall which was well gathered by Shwan Jalal.

The Blues dominated the game territorially, but couldn’t find many clear cut chances as time was running out – Hattersley blasting the ball over the bar from close range.

Hobson then lobbed a header onto the roof of the net, and Chester had ran out of time.
