Cheltenham 3 Chester 1

League leaders Cheltenham proved too much for the Blues – winning at Whaddon Road; but they were made to fight hard for the three points.

Billy Waters gave the hosts the lead – before Ross Hannah levelled with his 10th of the season – but second half goals from Waters and Danny Wright condemned Steve Burr’s side to defeat.

The hosts began the game by showing the reasons why they top the National League table; Pell picking the ball up and firing wide inside two minutes.

But Chester did have chances of their own early on, loanee Danny Hattersley smashing a shot over the bar from the edge of the box moments later; before missing another good chance on 11 minutes when Hannah teed him up.

However, Steve Burr’s men were hit with the sucker punch on 18 minutes; when the table toppers took the lead.

Pell’s free kick struck the post; but Munns kept his composure on the rebound to square for Waters to poke the ball home.

This goal seemed to spur the Robins on to try and extend their advantage; Munns shooting wide and Jennings dragging a shot beyond the post; before Jordan Chapell stung the palms of Dillon Phillips at the other end.

Then, just one minute before the break, Ross Hannah levelled the scores.

Tom Shaw set up his original chance, but Phillips made a superb save; however, the striker kept his head and nodded in the rebound to reach double figures for the season.

After the break, the pendulum swung in Chester’s favour and they had a glorious chance to take the lead – but Alex Whitmore’s header was cleared off the line.

Nevertheless, Cheltenham and Billy Waters hit the Blues with a second sucker punch on the hour mark.

Wright caught the defence out with a cross and Waters snuck in to tap home and give Gary Johnson’s side the lead once again.

It proved to be game, set and match to the Robins with three minutes of normal time remaining; Danny Wright tapping home from Jennings’ cross.
