Chester FC 1 Aldershot Town 0

New loan signing Matty Hughes scored a late goal on his debut to give Chester all three points against Aldershot.

The goal lifted Steve Burr's side to the lofty heights of 14th, now having a decent haul of twenty points from fifteen games.

Chester started the game the brighter. Some neat interchange on the edge of the box, involving new signing Matty Hughes, saw John Rooney shoot well wide before a low shot from Mahon was easily saved by Phil Smith. Rooney was threatening once more just five minutes later, as he glanced a header straight at the Shots keeper.
However, Aldershot were not short of chances themselves. Tom Derry shot straight at Jon Worsnop following a positive forward run, before Brett Williams fired over after racing beyond the defence.

The best chance of the half also fell to the visitors. A free kick whipped in beat the Chester defensive line, but Mark Phillips could somehow only glance the ball wide of the post from a matter of yards.

Then, a matter of minutes before the break, Craig Mahon had a goal chalked off when he netted from a Sean McConville cross, only to have been flagged offside.

Craig Mahon then had a great chance in the second half, but he could only shoot straight at the legs of keeper, before loan signing Hughes saw an audacious shot whistle just past the post. Another audacious attempt then came from McConville, who turned past one man, nutmegged another Shots player and rifled an effort that was agonizingly close to the top corner.

But the visitors then looked to break the deadlock as a Sam Hatton long throw caused havox, but Worsnop made an excellent smothering save.

Then the scene was set for the new signing Hughes to shine. He picked up the ball with his back to goal, swiveled and fired a left footed shot across the keeper into the corner to give Chester the lead with just ten minutes remaining, which proved to be the match winning goal.
