Chester's five match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end courtesy of a Brett Williams brace. The Aldershot forward struck in each half to put them within six points of Chester.
Williams’ first came after Steve Burr's men failed to clear a corner, and the second was finished off by the Shots attacker via the post.
Chester made one change to the side that won at Dartford, with Craig Linfield replacing the recently departed Matty Taylor.
The hosts had the better of the first half, exposing space that Chester had provided them with. The opening minutes were scrappy and the opening goal followed that theme.
Miscommunication within the defence allowed Brett Williams an eventual chance and he made no mistake in dispatching home from close range. Chester - playing in their yellow away strip - struggled to gain a foothold in the game before the break and went in at half time bitterly disappointed with the amount of chances created.
A double change saw Brendon Daniels and Jamie Menagh replace Craig Lindfield and Nathan Turner, and the visitors did improve in the second half with Craig Mahon registering the yellows first effort on target, forcing a good save out of Shots keeper Martin.
However, Aldershot then had a chance to finish off Chester a matter of minutes later. A long goal kick sailed over the defence and Jaydon Gibbs latched on to the ball, but he could only blaze over on an open goal after rounding up Aaron Chapman in the visiting net.
This let off gave Chester another surge of attacking threat as John Rooney nearly found the net directly from a corner, before Craig Mahon whipped in a vicious effort that stung the palms of Martin.
However, the game was effectively over late on as Shots leading scorer Williams doubled the hosts' advantage when the ball came to him - somewhat fortuitously - inside the box and he stabbed the ball into the net via the post.
Steve Burr's side couldn’t conjure up a late rally and were comfortably defeated by fellow relegation strugglers.
