Gainsborough Trinity 0 - 2 Chester FC

Chester FC moved to the brink of the Blue Square Bet North title as well as moving on to 100 points for the season with a two-nil win away at Gainsborough Trinity. Captain George Horan broke the deadlock with a spectacular volley before Tony Gray completed the scoring midway through the first half.

Chester were forced into an early substitution as Paul Linwood suffered what looked to be an ankle injury, he was replaced by Dominic Collins, fresh off the back of his outstanding performance on Monday.

It was the hosts who nearly broke the deadlock as Terry Hawkridge shot low from the edge of the area but it went just wide.

Nathan Jarman did the same at the other end, running at the Gainsborough defence before shooting inches wide.

The Blues took the lead in the twenty sixth minute with another absolute stunning goal. Gainsborough half cleared a long throw to captain George Horan on the edge of the area who volleyed the ball in off the underside of the crossbar.

Tony Gray doubled the lead five minutes later as Nathan Turner's cross was palmed away by Jason White straight to Dave Hankin, he centred it to Gray who shot high into the back of the net for his tenth goal of the league campaign.

Gainsborough had the opportunity to get back in the game as the ball bounced around the Chester penalty area from a corner but despite sitting up nicely for him centre back Domenic Roma blazed over from six yards, ensuring The Blues had a two goal cushion at the break.

Trinity started the second half enjoying more possession but it took ten minutes before they could create a meaningful chance, Paul Connor forcing John Danby into pushing a header over the crossbar.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and Paul Connor missed a golden opportunity to get one back as his snapshot went wide. Moments later and substitute Mark Jones found himself with a chance but Danby did well to make himself big and make the save.

Paul Connor had another opportunity to get Gainsborough back in the game but was stopped by a brilliant George Horan tackle which was enough to ensure Chester moved to the brink of the Blue Square Bet North title.
