Chester 2 Tranmere 3

A fantastic 5 goal thriller at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium ended in a come-back victory for Tranmere - winning 3-2 against a resilient Blues side.

Chester went into the game on the back of a victory at Southport last time out – and got off to the best of starts.

Evan Horwood was adjudged to have been fouled within the area – and referee Anthony Coggins pointed to the spot. Lead marksman James Alabi stood up to take, and had no doubts – sending Scott Davies the wrong way from twelve yards.

The Blues were without both captain and vice-captain Tom Shaw and Luke George for this encounter through injury – which meant new signing Lucas Dawson staked his claim on the Chester bench.

It was the visitors who went the closest within the opening minutes of the second half. Michael Ihiekwe stretched forward for a diving header before firing over the crossbar, with the low corner causing a few problems for the Blues defence.

And Micky Mellon’s side soon found their equaliser – through early first half substitute Jay Harris. A cross into the box was cleared away by the Chester defence, and the midfielder connected well with the ball to volley past Alex Lynch between the sticks for the Blues.

Jon McCarthy’s side decided to make a few tactical changes, playing 3 at the back with wing backs. And moments later, they found their second goal of this feisty encounter. Ryan Lloyd whipped in a corner, and Ryan Astles guided a glancing header into the far post – leaving Davies rooted to the spot.

Substitute James Norwood found the second equaliser for Rovers – with nine minutes left to play. Failing to clear a low cross, Norwood was quickest to the ball – and crashed the ball into the back of the net at the near post.

And after finding themselves behind twice, Tranmere scored their third through a magnificent strike from Andy Cook. The Tranmere striker beat Astles in the area before bringing the ball down and firing a right footed strike low into the back of the net.
