BREAKING | Blues legend Craig Mahon joins on Altrincham

Chester FC can this morning confirm that Craig Mahon has departed the club for Altrincham on a permanent basis.

Mahon joins our fellow National League North side after a memorable seven years with the Blues, with the Irishman becoming a firm fans favourite.

The 30-year-old departs the 1885 Arena with an incredible 239 Blues games under his belt, making him our longest serving player since reformation and also the record appearance holder for the club.

This season, Craig has made ten appearances in all competitions and has had a loan spell at Bet Victor Northern Premier side Ashton United.

A tricky winger with skill, high energy and an eagerness to work hard for the team, Mahon joined the club in May 2013 from Vauxhall Motors. He started off his career at Wigan Athletic before signing for Salford City in 2009 where he featured 24 times – scoring 8 goals in that spell. The Motormen then came calling where he completed 117 appearances and scoring seven times.

Upon arrival in CH1, Craig was initially sent out on loan to AFC Fylde, before making his mark on the Blues starting line up being recalled to score the winner in a 2-1 win at Hyde.

From that moment, ‘Mahony’ never looked back. Tearing up defences and making full backs dizzy, he was the shining light in the Blues FA Cup run to the Second Round in 2014/15.

After setting up a fantastic goal in the 4-2 qualifier win at Stockport County, he went on to score the winner at Southend in Round One. Incredibly, this was just the day after he became father to twins!

He was again excellent in the Second Round at Barnsley as the Blues drew 0-0 before losing in a replay.

In 2017, Craig made his 150th Blues appearance when we faced Tranmere – then on Tuesday 12th September 2017, Mahon became the Blues all time appearances record holder – surpassing George Horan’s 159 games in the Blue and White of Chester.

Mahon broke yet another record in 2018/19, making his 200th Chester FC appearance.

Everyone at Chester Football Club wishes a club legend in ‘Mahony’ the very best for the future – that is apart from when he faces the Blues!
